Passing the Time

It's official. Summertime is gone. Well, not the Texas heat & humidity. But those summer sleeping habits are outta here. History. Vamanos.

We survived the first week of school, and there's only one word to describe each of us: tired. We are sooooo tired. Our sleep habits have been disrupted in a big way, and we are all showing signs of exhaustion as a result. The kids have had meltdowns over the smallest of crises, and so have I. I have said and done things that have shocked even myself--when I actually REMEMBER that I have said and done them. My already failing memory is even worse when I have had little sleep. I am a girl who needs my beauty rest. And, so do my kids. Animesh is the only one who can operate on 4-5 hours a night and claim to feel rested. That's a surgeon for ya. Pretty scary.

So, on those days when Daddy can't take Priya to school at O-DARK-THIRTY, I haul the boys along with me so that I can take them to school afterwards. Problem is, the boys don't need to get there for another 45 minutes. What to do, what to do?

On this particular day we headed to Starbucks (boo-hoo that the Cinnamon Dolce Latte is gone, but HOORAY for the return of the Pumpkin Spice Latte!) where I loaded my boys up on chocolate donuts and chocolate milk (hope the teachers don't read this---). Afterwards, we went to the river, hot dog buns in hand, to feed the hungry ducks.

Deven really got into it...he even named some of them as he fed them.

Seconds before this picture was taken Trevor had his finger nipped by an overly ambitious duck-ager (most likely a duck in his or her mid-teens...not quite full grown but not a duckling...yes, I tend to make up my own words...). Trevor held onto the piece of bread for too long, and the duck-ager felt it necessary to remind Trevor why he was there...to FEED him. Trevor's facial expression never varied too far from this "I'm annoyed" look for the rest of the outing.

You can tell by Trevor's face in this picture that he is still miffed about the duck nipping at his finger. Now, every time we pass by the river he bellows, "Duck bite me!" What was supposed to be a fun adventure for him has turned him off to the cutest of animals. I, of course, feel terrible...just one more addition to the ever-growing "mommy guilt list."

So what are you going to do for the rest of the year? Yikes. Vienne and I went to breakfast at Bear Moon one day. We'll (or I'll) get tired of that real fast. We gotta come up with some ideas.
